I have just got my first cajon. I have noticed that the ones I have seen in the videos have a small gap at the top of the front face.

Should I adjust the screws on the front face to give me that gap and what's it for?

Try it (not more than 1 mm). You would possibly get so-called clap corners. It depends on what kind of snare-construction your cajon has. But pay attention that the bass (and the snare) does not loose it´s quality.
